About Waste Age: Collage Workshop (ASC73)

Discover the art of collage through this two-day workshop to discover this sustainable art practice.

What will you learn on this course?

Collage is rooted in Art history, from the Cubist papier colles of Picasso and Braque, to the powerful and political work of Dada artist Hannah Hoch and Pop Artist Richard Hamilton.

You’ll begin with a visit to Waste Age: What can design do?a major group exhibition on display at MAC, to collect inspiration and ideas.

Back in the studio you’ll work with recycled and scrap material to learn techniques in selecting, positioning and layering images and text to create powerful new artwork. Take inspiration from nature or campaign for a greener future through your work.

The process of producing collage by hand can be very therapeutic, providing an immediate, raw aesthetic to the finished artwork.

This course will cover

  • Using scale, proportion and geometry to maximise visual impact
  • Using colour, texture and typography in your designs
  • Use and refine craft skills in the creation of collage designs by hand

The tutor will provide a variety material, giving you the opportunity to create a range of alternative visual outcomes. Different design formats will also be touched upon during the course.

The class includes group tuition and one-to-one support from the tutor. Guidance will be tailored to your level of experience to help you achieve your own personal aims. The tutor will encourage an atmosphere of communication and co-operation through interactions with others in the class.

There will be time to view, reflect and constructively critique your own work and that of the other students in the class, all in a friendly and relaxed environment. The overall aim of the course is to help learners develop their own original style of producing art via the medium of collage. On completion of this course, you can expect to have produced two or more finished art works.
