About Wheelwork for Beginners and Improvers (CE112 Summer)

Whether this is your first time working with a pottery wheel or you wish to improve your wheelwork skills, this mix-level course is designed to build your skills and enhance your efficiency when creating thrown ceramics.

What will you learn on this course?

On this course the tutor will work with you to enhance your skills in thrown ceramics, and help you to improve your efficiency, consistency and accuracy when working with a wheel.

You will also have the opportunity to deepen your knowledge of wheelwork forms.

The tutor will encourage you to develop your skills and through repetition build your confidence, encouraging you to be selective about work that is retained for firing, so that you deepen your understanding of the art of wheelwork.

The tutor will encourage you to produce functional and non-functional items after completing a piece you can apply surface decoration with the use of various glaze colours which will then go on to be fired in the kiln.

Who is this course for?

This course is for adults aged 18+ years. It is open to beginners and improvers. You don’t need any previous clay work experience as full instruction and guidance is given. This course is ideal for those looking to try throwing pots on the potter’s wheel for the first time or improvers wishing to refine their skills and make new pieces of work.

At the heart of MAC is a focus on accessibility and inclusion. Please contact us to discuss your specific access needs. You do need dexterity in your hands to work with clay. The room is wheelchair accessible and MAC does have accessible potter’s wheels. A support worker or carer may assist; carers must book a complimentary ticket if attending to provide support.

Do you need to bring anything?

Short sleeves, old trousers, and an apron are recommended as working with clay can get messy, but it should wash off easily.

Are there any additional costs?

There are no additional costs. The course price includes all materials and firing of your work. Please note that there will be a clay and firing charge for any oversized work, please discuss with the tutor.
