About Beautiful Thing - 30th Anniversary
Beautiful Thing is one of the sweetest of all gay films, telling the story of troubled teen boys - Jamie (Glen Berry) who is picked on at school and Ste (Scott Neal) who is bullied at home – who find love in each other’s arms. Told against a suburban London estate backdrop, it’s packed with wit, with a sparky script based on the stage play by Jonathan Harvey.
As part of the BFI’s nationwide Rip It Up season, Birmingham actress and MAC cinema devotee Enva Lewis (How To Have Sex, Your Fault: London) has put together a season of films about the defiance, joy and vulnerability of growing up as a city kid in Britain.
Enva Lewis on why she chose Beautiful Thing - ‘Some films get made and never really get spoken about. This is one of them. It paints a picture of what growing up on the sidelines is like, all while being surrounded by love. Even if that love comes in a slightly rough cockney package. For KV - I love you.
