Punk rocker, actor and sometime TV host Ed Tudor-Pole joins TV archivists Kaleidoscope for a special all day event looking back at music on television, including A Boy Called Donovan, The Max Headroom Show and 1989 TV drama Somewhere To Run. He’ll also be chatting about his new book The Pen Is Mightier: Autobiography Of A Punk Rocker.
10am: A Whole Scene Going
A recovered episode featuring Dudley Moore, Unit Four Plus Two, Shirley Anne Field, Marianne Faithfull and Annie Nightingale (without sunglasses) partying in her flat.

10.30am: A Boy Called Donovan
A dreamy wander with Donovan Phillips Leitch and his guitar through Cornwall, entertaining the commuters on London Bridge and on the set of Ready Steady Go! A poor quality incomplete copy had been circulating and this lovely quality print had a German soundtrack. Luckily an off air audio recording was located to merge with it.

11.15am: Show of the Week - Dusty at the Talk of the Town
This was missing from the archives but a 16mm film appeared at an auction last September. A consortium bought it and donated it to Kaleidoscope. Being on BBC2 it was originally transmitted in colour, but survives in black and white.

AKA An Easter With Rod. Missing until 2013, this is a chance to see the long since demolished newsagents in North London his parents ran and where Rod grew up. With Long John Baldry.

Max is back by popular request. This edition from an off air recording includes great pre and mid CH4 adverts. Max then urges us to hire a CD player from Radio Rentals.

1.30pm: Salute to Sir Lew Grade: The 3 Lennon Songs
Recorded at the New York Hilton, John Lennon performed 3 songs as part of this tribute with his band BOMF - Slippin’ and Sliding, Stand By Me & Imagine. Stand By Me was not shown. Believed lost, Ray Langstone tracked it down at the BFI as part of a longer version for us to show today.

1.45pm: The Rolling Stones in Aberdeen
Shot by STV, this features lovely raw colour footage of fans waiting to buy tickets for the Stones concert (£6.50!) at the Capitol Theatre Aberdeen in 1982. The Stones are seen arriving at the airport and performing on stage.
2.10pm: Rolling Stones on the radio and more film footage
The Stones appeared on Radio Luxembourg ‘You’re the Tops’ to promote ‘I Wanna be Your Man’. They are then filmed by HTV West news in the Odeon Cinema, Weston Super Mare on 25 August 1964. Mick is then interviewed on the roof by Bruce Hockin.
2.25 pm: Ed Tudor-Pole Q&A
Ed formed the punk band Tenpole Tudor in 1977. He has appeared in films including The Great Rock & Roll Swindle, Sid and Nancy and Absolute Beginners. His first role was an extra in Somewhere to Run. He hosted The Crystal Maze and has numerous television credits. He is currently touring and his autobiography The Pen Is Mightier was published on 8 April which he will be signing copies of during the afternoon break. Examples of Ed’s work will be shown during the Q&A.

Highlights from the Rome Pop Festival 1968 with performances by The Nice, The Association, Ten Years After, Donovan, Brian Auger Trinity with Julie Driscoll & Pink Floyd.

Tom Robinson in the caravan & Frankie Goes to Hollywood in 1 on the Road (1984), Ian Anderson on the Leo Sayer show, The Hollies ‘Frightened Lady’ & Dusty on The Rolf Harris Show (1970), Vera Lynn sings with The Tremeloes and also joins The Fortunes in ‘You’ve Got Your Troubles’ in her own show (1969)
