About Shock Treatment

Not everyone is aware that The Rocky Horror Picture Show even had a sequel. And whereas the first film was in love with classic Hollywood, Richard O’Brien’s follow-up is entirely indebted to the world of television – to the point that it’s set entirely within the confines of a TV studio.

Set several years after the events of Rocky Horror, Shock Treatment finds our heroes Brad and Janet (here played by Cliff DeYoung and Jessica Harper) on marriage-themed game show Marriage Maze – a show housed in the Denton TV Studio, where every small event is filmed and broadcast in front of a live studio audience that never leave their seats.

Presenting a world of reality TV before reality TV was even a thing and riffing on medical soap operas and family sitcoms, Shock Treatment is both a madcap satire of television and a very fun musical that’s far better than its reputation suggests.

The screening will be introduced by film academic Sabina Stent.
