Batik (ASC89)

Learn how to create beautiful batik using wax, batik tjantings, dyes and pigments.

What will you learn on this course?

Batik is a wax resist technique originating from Indonesia. This course is ideal for those who have never tried batik, or those who wish to deepen their skill in working with tjantings and melted wax.

The course will increase your confidence in

• creating a design for batik
• drawing with wax using tjanting tools
• application of colourful dyes on to the fabric
• create a batik free hand

Participants will finish the day having created a hand-painted batik design.

Who is this course for?

This course is for adults aged 18+ years. It is open to beginners and improvers. It is suitable for people who are completely new to textiles, and for those who want to extend and refine their techniques.

At the heart of MAC is a focus on accessibility and inclusion. Please contact us to discuss your specific access needs. This course involves working at low tables, working with hot wax and standing for short periods of time. Good dexterity is needed in your hands. The room is wheelchair accessible. A personal assistant or companion must book a complimentary ticket if attending to provide support.

Do you need to bring anything?

Please wear old clothes and bring a waterproof apron. Batik equipment and dyes are provided along with an allocation of cotton material. If you prefer to work on a large-scale piece, please bring your own material to create that.

Are there any additional costs?

If you wish to work on a larger scale batik, please bring your own fabric. We recommend plain calico, cotton or silk.
