About Contemporary Portraiture (VA13 Spring)

Working directly from a life model, explore traditional and contemporary portraiture.

What will you learn on this course?

This is a flexible course for students interested in contemporary approaches to drawing and painting portraits. You will learn drawing and painting skills including measurement, proportion, line, tone, and colour. You will have the opportunity to explore different art materials including pencils, charcoal, pastels, acrylic paint, and watercolour.

The tutor will provide tailored individual guidance according to your experience, aptitude and specific goals, and will support you to find your own creative direction. For beginners, the course will be structured into weekly group projects. The tutor will demonstrate a technique and provide examples, then provide support as students try out the technique. More experienced students are welcome to undertake their own projects and the tutor will provide input as and when needed.

These sessions provide an opportunity to further your individual drawing and painting skills all while working from a professional clothed life model. We employ a range of different male and female models who will sit for two consecutive weeks.
