About Family Science of Art: Pinhole Cameras (CSC273)

Meet author Ruth Millington as she presents her new children’s book ‘The Science of Art’ (Dorling Kindersley, 2026). Discover the science behind pinhole cameras and have a go at making your own.

What will you learn on this course?

In ‘The Science of Art’, Ruth uncovers the magic behind masterpieces, including the world's very first cameras when they were entire rooms!

Combining fascinating art facts with the creativity and excitement of a craft session, this workshop will encourage children and their grown-up to uncover the technical methods behind creativity.

Dive into the world of experimental photography where you’ll transform ordinary drink cans into your very own DIY pinhole cameras. Through playful making and experimentation, you’ll learn how to use your handmade camera to capture unique images of the world around you. Then, develop your photographs using sustainable, homemade developer recipes made from everyday ingredients, while learning the science behind the process.

Ruth Millington is a Birmingham based art historian, critic and writer. Buy a copy of her new book from the MAC shop for signing at the end of the workshop.

The practical part of the workshop is led by experimental photographer Tom Godwin, who will introduce the unconventional techniques that sparked his passion for experimental photography and guide you through the entire creative process, from building your camera to revealing your final images.
