About From Art to Stitch (TE110 Summer)

This is a practical hands-on course where you will learn how to be creative with textures, embroidery stitches and textile art. You will be guided through the many ways textures and textile art can be created to make unique pieces of artwork.

What will you learn on this course?

At the start of this course you will be given a theme title as your starting point. You will learn how to gather as much inspiring source material as possible. You will learn how to generate ideas beginning with mark making, drawing and painting to exploring and playing with mixed-media materials and techniques. The aim of this course is to inspire you to learn new skills and techniques to create different layers of textures and where you will incorporate stitched embroidery to create textile art. You will be able to develop your ideas further and gain confidence in developing your own individual style and approach.

This course allows you to explore mixed-media materials, experiment with threads and stitch, be creative with fabric and print/dye your own fabrics.

This course will cover the following materials including;
•    Fabrics
•    Embroidery floss/ Threads/ Yarn
•    Wool
•    Trimmings
•    Mixed-media materials
•    Fabric paint
•    Dyes

And specific techniques including;
•    Mark making
•    Drawing/ Painting
•    Fabric manipulation
•    Manipulation of materials
•    Embroidery stitches
•    Appliqué 
•    Printing
•    Dyeing
•    Weaving
•    Knitting

You will learn how to use new techniques and materials through tutor demonstrations and examples to give you ideas and inspiration. You will be given the time to explore, learn and practice them at your own level of experience to achieve your personal aims. You will be guided at every stage to inspire you and to help develop your skills further.

As you progress on this course you will bring your research, design ideas and the techniques you have learnt together to work towards making original artwork.

On completion of this course you can expect to have gained the skills and confidence to create textures and textile art. You will have produced a finished piece of artwork long with a sketchbook full of research, images, texture, fabric, stitch, print samples. You will have enjoyed working with a friendly group of like-minded people in a calm and relaxing class.

Previous students have made wall hangings, framed artwork, 3D boxes, 3D artwork and much more.

Each term the tutor changes the course content, the theme, materials and techniques. This makes learning From Art to Stitch exciting for new students and further developing the skills of those returning.

Who is this course for?

This course is suitable for adults aged 18+ years at all levels. Including, beginners who have no sewing experience, to improvers who are looking to develop their technical skills and inspire their creativity.  

At the heart of MAC is a focus on accessibility and inclusion. Please contact us to discuss your specific access needs. The room is wheelchair accessible. A support worker or carer may assist; carers must book a complimentary ticket if attending to provide support.

Do you need to bring anything?

The Textile Studio is stocked with materials, dyes and equipment for students to use. Please bring a sketchbook with you for the start of the course. We also encourage you to bring in your own special materials for individual projects.
