About Introduction to Classical Representational Drawing (VA109 Spring)

Join us on this course to learn how to create representational drawings of the human figure, develop your observational and measurement skills, and create your own highly developed art works!

What will you learn on this course?

In this 12-week course, you will learn the art of classical drawing following the atelier method, a form of fine art instruction modelled after the historic private art studios of Europe in the 19th century.

The course will cover the following;

  • Observational skills
  • Measurement of the form
  • Techniques of proportion, lighting, tone, form and detail
  • Contouring and shading
  • Selection of appropriate materials to achieve desired effect
  • Time management skills and methodical planning

  • Confidence Building

This is a great course for those interested in learning to draw from life, as you will be studying a life (nude) model for the second half of the course.

The course will focus on drawing using charcoal, black crayon and paper stumps however advanced students are welcome to bring materials to work in other mediums such as watercolour or pastels.

You will be introduced to contemporary approaches and cultural interpretations of this classical methodology.

The tutor will support your learning through demonstrations and assistance based on your individual needs and aims.

Who is this course for?

This course is for adults aged 18+ years. It is open to all levels including beginners who have no prior drawing experience, and improvers who are looking to refine their skills.

At the heart of MAC is a focus on accessibility and inclusion. Please contact us to discuss your specific access needs. The room is wheelchair accessible. A support worker or carer may assist; carers must book a complimentary ticket if attending to provide support.

Do you need to bring anything?

The drawing and painting studio is equipped with easels and drawing boards. Basic art materials will be provided but you may wish to bring your own resources as the course develops.

Are there any additional costs?

Any additional materials must be provided at your own expense.
