Introduction to Music Theory (ASC184)

Develop your understanding of music to support singing or instrumental courses. 

What will you learn on this course?

An introduction to reading sheet music and the basics of music theory for absolute beginners. 

We will explore pulse, rhythm and notation through simple songs and body percussion (such as clapping and tapping) to understand how music is written and how it connects to the sounds we make.

This course could be used to complement other song writing, instrument or singing courses and would be excellent support for those working towards grading. 

Who is this course for? 

This course is for adults aged 18+ years. This course is suitable for all levels, singers who are just starting out, beginner instrumentalists, or anyone who has previously learnt songs by ear and would like to develop their understanding of reading and using musical notation. No previous experience is necessary.

Do you need to bring anything? 

No additional equipment is required. You may wish to bring a notebook. You may bring along an instrument, if you have one, after the first week but it is not necessary.
