About Introduction to Sewing & Dressmaking (TE09 Spring)

Learn how to use a sewing machine for dressmaking and sewing techniques, before putting them to practice and making an item of clothing.

What will you learn on this course?

This course will introduce participants to the simple techniques of sewing. The tutor will give step by step demonstrations and participants will be encouraged to sew independently with additional support as required. Having completed a series of samples participants will apply these new skills to make a garment of their choosing. Participants will learn how to adjust a pattern to their own size and make a toile before a sewing final version in their chosen fabric.

The course will cover:
•    How to use a domestic machine
•    Using sewing equipment safely
•    Precision and accuracy when sewing
•    How to sew seams, darts, finishing techniques, pockets, set a sleeve and construct a waistband
•    Understand fitting techniques and how to toile a garment
•    How to read a commercial sewing pattern and make adjustments

On completion of this course, participants can expect to have produced a selection of samples with explanations to take home for future sewing projects.

Participants will also have sewn a finished garment, with a pattern adjusted to their size to use again. Participants will feel more confident about sewing clothing in the future.
