About Introduction to Wheelwork for Beginners (CE105 Summer)

Learn a series of basic techniques in the art of wheel throwing including clay preparation to creating cylinders followed by cups and bowls, then progress to other forms followed by glazing and firing your work.

What will you learn on this course?

On this course, the tutor will demonstrate the key stages of wheel throwing, enabling you to create pieces with great satisfaction.

You will begin by focusing on two main forms: the cylinder and the bowl. You will then be able to build on this to create other shapes and forms. You will also learn the technique of turning.

The tutor will encourage you to develop your skills and through repetition, build your confidence. You will be encouraged to be selective about work that is retained for firing so that you deepen your understanding of the art of wheelwork.

The tutor will guide you through making both functional and non-functional items. Once pieces are complete, you will be introduced to the art of surface decoration with the use of various glaze colours. All completed items will be fired in the kiln.

Please note, by the nature of ceramics there is always a risk of technical failure, cracks or explosions for which we cannot be held responsible.

Who is this course for?

This course is for adults aged 18+ years. It is aimed at beginners who have no previous wheel throwing experience, and full guidance will be given at all stages.
