About Let’s Make you an Artist: Mosaics (CSC262)

Inspired by her new children’s book, This Book Will Make You An Artist (Nosy Crow, 2024), art historian and author Ruth Millington presents a series of summer workshops delivered in partnership with MAC Artist Tutors.

What will you learn on this course?

Mosaics are an ancient technique for creating artwork using small, colourful pieces of glass, ceramic or stone. Explore artists of the ancient world and create a mosaic inspired by their patterns.

You will learn how to draw a design, transfer it onto your chosen base and how to attach the mosaic tiles. The tutor will provide access to a wide variety of materials such as colourful tiles and beads, working with pre-cut tiles or progressing to creating cut shapes. Each participant will create their own piece to take away.

Combining fascinating art facts with the creativity and excitement of a craft session, this workshop will encourage children and their grown-up to take inspiration from great artists of the past.

Ruth Millington is a Birmingham based art historian, critic and writer. Buy a copy of her new book from the MAC shop for signing at the end of the workshop.

Who is this course for?

This one-day workshop is suitable for children aged 6 to 11 years accompanied by their parent or guardian who are looking for an opportunity to enjoy learning together. It is open to all levels.

The workshop is accessible for people of all abilities. Manual dexterity in your hands is required. Parents and guardians work with their children and all activity is planned to meet the specific needs of the group. The room is wheelchair accessible.

Age ranges are set carefully to account for key age developments, materials being used, and course stimulus. It is very important that age ranges are not too large or across key stages and therefor need to be adhered to.

Do you need to bring anything?

All course material and equipment are provided.

There is a one-hour break for lunch, not provided.

Are there any additional costs?

The workshop price covers one adult and one child. There is a charge for each additional person (child or adult). At least one adult must be present for every three children.

Please note the grout on your mosaic may take time to dry. If it is not completely set by the end of the workshop you may prefer to leave your work at MAC for collection at a later date.
