About Strange & Surreal: Creative Character Design (CSC293)

Explore the strange and surreal as you design your own creepy characters, mysterious settings and imaginative scenes!

What will you learn on this course?

On this course, you will explore character design, drawing and painting through the themes of Halloween, surrealism and the gothic world of film and animation. Taking inspiration from artists and filmmakers such as Tim Burton, participants will experiment with exaggerated features, unusual shapes, dramatic shadows and atmosphere to develop your own original characters, prop designs and visual worlds.

You will develop ideas from initial sketches into finished artworks through learning artistic skills and techniques, before bringing them together to create a collaborative spooky world and imaginary story.

The course will cover:
•    How artists use shape, proportion and exaggerated features to create memorable characters in animation movies.
•    How to develop characters from initial ideas and sketches into a final design.
•    Drawing and painting techniques including tonal range, dramatic lighting, shadows, patterns and colour to create imaginative settings.
•    How artists use atmosphere and visual effects to tell a story. Working collaboratively to build a shared visual world and storyline.

On completion of this course, you will have understood and created your own characters & movie ideas and how artist’s techniques play a huge part in your favourite movies! Your drawings and prop designs come to life through drawing and painting.
