About Textiles: Surface Decoration (TE07 Autumn)
Explore surface decoration in textiles, with a particular focus on metals and how to incorporate this in your work.
What will you learn on this course?
This course offers a practical introduction to textile surface decoration.
You will start your design work by experimenting with mark making – taking inspiration from different objects – to make several samples, using a range of textile techniques. You will then progress to create a final piece, such as a book cover, picture, piece of jewellery or wall hanging.
You’ll be supported in planning your own creative projects while exploring a wide range of techniques throughout your learning journey. Guided by themes suggested by the Tutor, you’ll have the opportunity to experiment and develop your own unique work.
Demonstrations and handouts will be provided to introduce a variety of techniques, including working with metal sheets, foiling, wirework, fusible fibres, embossing, and both hand and machine embroidery.
Textile techniques will include:
- Hand embroidery
- Machine stitching and free motion embroidery
- Rust dyeing
- Markel oil sticks
- Foiling
- Applique
- How to incorporate metal in your work
You will make references to traditional and contemporary artists who have used similar sources of inspiration.
