About Upcycling Clothing for Beginners (ASC134)

Support sustainable fashion practices by learning to turn preloved garments into something new!

What will you learn on this course?

Learn how to turn a pair of jeans or trousers into a skirt and a T-shirt into an infinity scarf or headband.

During the course participants will:

  • Learn how deconstruct existing garments and re-purpose.
  • Develop knowledge, precision and accuracy in sewing.
  • Progress sewing machine skills and technique.

A full health and safety briefing will be given at the beginning of the workshop. The tutor will give a small introduction about the class content and will give a step by step demonstration.

After each step is demonstrated, the attendees are encouraged to sew that individual step alone. However, those who require additional support will be assisted by the tutor as and when questions or problem arise.

At the end of the course, you will have a number of finished garments to take away and have developed skills to upcycle your own clothing, giving a new lease of life to your wardrobe.

Who is this course for?

This one-day course is suitable for adults aged 18+ years working at a beginner level. We suggest that participants have some previous sewing skills and feel comfortable using a sewing machine.

At the heart of MAC is a focus on accessibility and inclusion. Participants will need to be able to control a sewing machine, use pins, scissors and needles. Dexterity in hands essential. The course requires sitting at a machine or leaning over a table to cut fabric.

Please contact us to discuss your specific access needs. The room is wheelchair accessible. A personal assistant or companion must book a complimentary ticket if attending to provide support.

Do you need to bring anything?

A selection of essential sewing equipment and sewing machine will be provided.

Participants need to bring a pair of preloved jeans or trousers that fit around the waist and a T-shirt. You are welcome to bring a few choices to work with time permitting.

You are welcome to bring your own sewing kit, if preferred, consisting of hand sewing needles, thread, tape measure, stitch ripper, pins, scissors (large and small), pens, pencils, ruler, tailors chalk.
