About Wheelwork: Tableware (CE113 Autumn)

Discover the art of wheel throwing and hand building to create tableware while learning a series of techniques including clay preparation, creating cylinders and bowls, and glazing and firing your work.

What will you learn on this course?

On this course, the tutor will demonstrate the key stages of wheel throwing, enabling you to create pieces with great satisfaction.

You will begin by focusing on two main forms: the cylinder and the bowl. Other forms can then be created from these, including a cup and saucer.

These shapes and forms can then be used to create bowls, other kitchen or table ware, and decorative items including vases and lidded pieces. You’ll be encouraged to create a connected collection of work with a unique mark or identity that functions as attractive tableware.

The tutor will encourage you to develop your skills and through repetition, build your confidence. You will be encouraged to be selective about work that is retained for firing so that you deepen your understanding of the art of wheelwork.

The tutor will guide you through making functional tableware. Once pieces are complete, you will be introduced to the art of surface decoration with the use of various glaze colours. All completed items will be fired in the kiln.

Who is this course for?

This course is for adults aged 18+ years. It is aimed at beginners who have no previous wheel throwing experience, and full guidance will be given at all stages.

Short sleeves, old trousers, and an apron are recommended as working with clay can get messy, but it should wash off easily.
