About Writers Reading Group (WR12 Spring)

This course combines a reading group with a writing course. Read published texts and analyse them as a group, then use them as a model to develop your own creative writing skills.

What will you learn on this course?

The Writers Reading Group is a creative hybrid of a writing and reading group in which short stories, novels, and other texts are selected as models for developing your own writing. From studying accomplished prose writers, you will learn writing skills such as characterisation, plot development, techniques of description writing and dialogue, how to write a good short story, and plot outlines. Through discussing good fiction, you will move beyond simply loving or hating the book to being able to use it as a prompt to develop your own writing.

Each term will focus on a different genre or style of writing, such as memoir or dystopia. Two or three books will be discussed each term, for each book you will spend one session discussing it, then one or two sessions sharing participants’ writing responses to it. The tutor will lead the sessions and facilitate the group in giving feedback to each other.
