Saranjit Birdi: Father's Lines
About Saranjit Birdi: Father's Lines
An exciting afternoon of dance and panel discussion. Featuring new co-collaborative performances by artist Saranjit Birdi, dancers Javier Rojas and Marlo Kempsey-Fagg (Birmingham Royal Ballet), saxophonist Luke Chakrabarti (Royal Birmingham Conservatoire), MC Alpha Conception (Payback Season) and dancer Eddie Muuya.
This bilingual, combined-arts work interprets stories of acclaimed yet lesser-known Punjabi author, the artist’s father, late Surjit Birdi. The semi-autobiographical writing published in the 1960s-70s, explored migration, family, suicide, colonialism and sexuality, which resonate today. His untimely death in 1972 aged 36, left a legacy to be fulfilled by his son.
Related artworks by the artist will be exhibited at MAC.
The project is supported by the Arts Council and Heritage Lottery Fund. Other project events include a Print & Poetry Day and exhibition at Castle Bromwich Historic Gardens, installations at Historic Winterbourne House and ‘Art & Conversation with Poetry’ event at University of Wolverhampton.
