About Shehrbano Ka Ranjha by Raqs Arts
A captivating new musical theatre production that weaves together storytelling, live music, poetry and dance to create an immersive journey into the heart of Punjab's cultural traditions.
Set against the vibrant backdrop of rural Punjab, Shehrbano Ka Ranjha follows the story of Shehrbano, a spirited young woman whose destiny becomes entwined with that of a mysterious flute player. As their paths cross amidst village life, colourful melas and moments of celebration, a tale of love, longing and enchantment unfolds.
Inspired by the rich tradition of oral storytelling, this original production reimagines folklore for contemporary audiences through evocative narrative, expressive dance and a powerful live musical score. Exploring themes of love, memory and human connection, the performance transports audiences into a world where music becomes both storyteller and companion.
Featuring acclaimed flautist Ali Shair performing live in the role of Ranjha and Ravneet Kaur as Shehrbano, the production is written and produced by Mona Shafique and narrated by Mona Shafique and Harmit Singh, who also serves as Music Producer.
The performance also features musician and poet Qasim Shah, alongside women folk singers accompanied by the dholki, creating a rich and vibrant soundscape that beautifully blends traditional Punjabi folk music with contemporary influences.
