Sunset Sufi Sounds: A Brum Musical Showcase
About Sunset Sufi Sounds: A Brum Musical Showcase
Join us in the Outdoor Theatre for a magical summer evening celebrating the folk and Sufi music traditions of Pakistan, performed by some of Birmingham's finest folk musicians. This special concert pays tribute to the artists and community groups whose dedication has helped keep these rich musical traditions alive, bringing joy and cultural pride across generations.
Headlining the event is Birmingham's acclaimed Azad Kashmir Folk Group. Formed in 1984, they are recognised as leading exponents of Sher Khawani, a unique form of raw, devotional, hypnotic and transcendental Sufi music rooted in the spiritual songs of Pothar and the regions of Jammu & Kashmir. Their performances combine powerful vocals with traditional instruments including sitar, dholak and clay percussion.
Joining them is the outstanding vocalist Lala Qadir, renowned for his renditions of Hamd, Naat, Saif-ul-Malook and Sufiana Kalaam. Folk singer Tariq Sahir, celebrated for his emotive Kafi-style vocals, performs with his signature tumba, accompanied by musicians on baja and dholki. Completing the line-up, Ustad Jaan Ali Khan and his ensemble bring the exhilarating energy of traditional dhamaal rhythms from the hills of Potohar and Kashmir.
As the sun sets, immerse yourself in an uplifting evening of music, spirituality, culture and community. Traditional snacks and refreshments will also be available for your enjoyment.
