About Surreal Solihull
This exhibition honours the legacy of Emmy Bridgwater, who called Solihull home in her final years. Bridgwater’s bold, uncanny visions shaped British surrealism and, in her spirit, 29 artists based in the West Midlands have created new work on the theme of ‘Surreal’.
From collaged bird lands to painted dreamscapes and a magic mirror sculpture, this show invites viewers to see the familiar in unexpected ways, and encounter surreality in everyday life. It is being curated by art historian and author Ruth Millington.
This free exhibition was originally commissioned by Solihull Council, supported by the West Midlands Combined Authority’s Commonwealth Games Legacy Fund and developed in partnership with The Mayor Gallery in London and the Emmy Bridgwater Estate. Having been exhibited as reproductions on large-scale display boards around Solihull, the physical artworks will now find a home at MAC.
