A man in period clothing stands in the centre of a gothic laboratory, looking up at towering brass and copper structure. The atmospheric scene features a large cylindrical apparatus with red lighting on the left, ornate scientific instruments, and stone walls decorated with carved faces and mysterious symbols. Steam or smoke fills the air, and the cobblestone floor and arched ceiling create a dungeon-like atmosphere.

About BFI LFF 2025: Frankenstein

Few contemporary filmmakers are as adept at balancing attention to detail and technical prowess with genuine emotional heft as Academy Award-winning filmmaker Del Toro (Pan’s Labyrinth, The Shape of Water).

His take on Shelley’s masterpiece movingly captures the sense of isolation and yearning, while creating a fugue of dread and elemental horror. Goth is outstanding as Elizabeth and Elordi delivers a heart-stealing performance as the monster.

Presented as part of the 69th BFI London Film Festival in partnership with American Express.
