Two women lie on a rumpled white sheet, seen from above, gazing upward with their mouths wide open. The woman on the left has tousled dark hair, blue eyeshadow, and heavy black liner. The woman on the right has short red hair, a crown of small flowers, and similar black eye makeup. Both wear dresses made of crumpled newspaper tied with twine, and their hands reach up toward each other in the center of the frame.

About Daisies

A foundational milestone of feminist cinema, Věra Chytilová's Daisies is an anarchic ride in which two young women engage in a series of dates with older men, outrageous pranks, and food fights while throwing tradition out the window.

From its visual, colorful montages to its skewering of patriarchal notions of femininity and ideas surrounding the female grotesque, as Dorota Lech wrote for the BFI, ‘this provocative and timeless gem is a surrealist fever dream and begs the viewer to open their eyes to what is sacred to them.’

The screening will be introduced by visual culture historian Dr. Sabina Stent.
