A young woman with dark brown hair and striking blue eyes leans forward, gazing intensely at the camera. She wears a cream-coloured puffer jacket with the hood up around her shoulders. Her hair is slightly dishevelled, with a fringe across her forehead. The background shows an overcast rural landscape with rolling hills, dry grass, and a telegraph pole, suggesting a cold, grey day.

About Effi O Blaenau

Up-and-coming star Leisa Gwenllian (On the Sea) is magnetic as hard-partying Effi, a young woman in rural Wales whose life largely revolves around drinking vodka with her mates and eating instant noodles to cure her subsequent hangovers. We’re invited to walk a mile in Effi’s shoes after a night on the town dramatically changes her life, in a dramedy that also offers commentary on the socio-economic issues faced by rural communities everywhere.

Marc Evans’ big-screen adaptation of Gary Owen’s celebrated one-woman play Iphigenia in Splott opens it out into a spikily funny character study that is also unexpectedly poignant.
