About Japan Foundation Touring Film Programme 2025: What Happened To Our Nest Egg!?

Housewife Atsuko (Yuki Amami) is saving up for retirement, trying to live frugally as she worries about the future. The other members of her family live comparatively carefree lives. Suddenly, a series of unfortunate happenings spell financial disaster: a family argument saddles Atsuko with the cost of her father-in-law’s funeral, she is fired from her part-time job, bankruptcy ends Akira’s company, Mayumi plans an extravagant wedding, and Atsuko’s mother-in-law – whose big-spending reputation precedes her – moves in too!

It’s thought that in Japan, a person needs 20 million yen to retire comfortably, yet the financial worry this causes often goes undiscussed. Taking aim at this taboo, What Happened to Our Nest Egg!? sees Tetsu Maeda shine a comical light on the economic issues we will all face eventually and the ways matters of money affect families.
