About Painting with Watercolours (VA05 Spring)

An introduction to the materials and techniques required to produce exciting watercolours including drawing, composition and colour-mixing.

What will you learn on this course?

This termly course will give you an introduction to a range of watercolour techniques, and enable you to build confidence when painting in this medium.

Starting with a subject matter such a natural form, landscapes, flowers, or still life, you will create a series of works throughout the course that allow you to develop skills such as:

  • Creating a balanced composition
  • Developing a draft drawing
  • Mixing colours
  • Blending and layering
  • Wet on wet
  • Wet on dry
  • Building tone
  • Adding texture through mark making

There will be opportunity to discuss ideas and intentions with the group and you will receive support in developing your own independent artistic style.

The tutor will develop a guided programme of study with the group, providing demonstrations and one-to-one support when required.

Who is this course for?

This course is suitable for adults aged 18+ years. It is open to beginners, who may be completely new to watercolours, and improvers, who are looking to refine their skills. You do not need to have any previous painting experience as full instruction is provided.

At the heart of MAC is a focus on accessibility and inclusion. Please contact us to discuss your specific access needs. The room is wheelchair accessible. A support worker or carer may assist; carers must book a complimentary ticket if attending to provide support.

Do you need to bring anything?

The studio is equipped with easels and drawing boards. Watercolour paper is provided and basic art materials may be borrowed on the day, such as pencils, erasers, sharpeners, brushes and paint. You may wish to bring additional materials to work with.

Are there any additional costs?

Any additional materials must be bought at the participant’s expense.
