About Cyanotype Printing (ASC164)

Spend a day learning the techniques of cyanotype, often called sun printing, using the traditional photographic process of creating beautiful blue and white prints.

What will you learn on this course?

You will initially experiment on paper using plants and objects with interesting detail i.e. ferns and feathers and progress to adding matter to alter your prints with colour and texture.

Using paper and fabric substrates, you will be encouraged to draw or trace your own patterns and designs to expose unique prints. You will be shown samples to provide inspiration and ideas to develop and embellish your beautiful samples at home with stitch.

Be inspired by MAC’s exhibitions by artists Genevieve Robertson (on display Sat 25 Apr - Sun 5 Jul)  and Clare Hewitt (on display Sat 18 Apr - Mon 31 Aug), who both use natural materials to create their work.

Who is this course for?

This course is for adults aged 18+ years. It is open to all levels.

At the heart of MAC is a focus on accessibility and inclusion. Please contact us to discuss your specific access needs. This course involves working at low tables and good dexterity is needed in your hands. The room is wheelchair accessible. A personal assistant or companion must book a complimentary ticket if attending to provide support.

Do you need to bring anything?

The tutor will provide a limited supply of objects and foliage; however, you may find it useful to bring any leaves, black and white negatives or small objects with interesting shapes or detail around the edges, preferably flat or that can be flattened. For example, ferns, ginkgo leaf, honesty seed heads, lace doily etc. Where your object is solid it prevents the light penetrating and reacting with the chemicals and therefore creates a solid white shape so fine details produce better prints.

Notebook and pen to record your findings.

An Apron.
