Drawing & Painting Nature (VA84 Spring)

Using a mixture of media, develop work based on observations of natural forms within still-life, figure, and MAC’s surrounding landscape.

What will you learn on this course?

Using nature as a starting point to stimulate curiosity and creativity, develop your drawing and painting skills. Through the use of direct observation and strategies for gathering reference, you will learn skills including measurement, proportion, line, tone, monochrome, limited palette, and full colour. You will have the opportunity to explore the use of different art materials such as pencils, charcoal, pastels, acrylic paint, watercolour and mixed media.

You will work directly from natural subjects provided by the tutor. Topics of study include: flowers, plants, fruit, vegetables, shells, pebbles, trees, clouds, landscape, water, animals, shadows, portrait.

This structured course consists mainly of two week projects on each nature topic, though students will have the freedom to work longer on certain topics should they wish. Topics will be introduced by the tutor with examples of his own work and practical demonstrations. There will be one session with a portrait model.

Each student will receive individual attention according to their experience and skill level, supporting them to develop a practical understanding of art materials and a greater appreciation of aspects and nature. Advanced students are invited to participate in group projects where they wish or have tutor assistance with developing their own individual projects.

This course aims to offer a relaxed environment, conducive to quiet concentration where students can progress with their individual creative journey.

Who is this course for?

This course is suitable for adults aged 18+ years. It is open to beginners with no prior experience and improvers who are looking to refine their skills.

At the heart of MAC is a focus on accessibility and inclusion. Please contact us to discuss your specific access needs. The room is wheelchair accessible. A support worker or carer may assist; carers must book a complimentary ticket if attending to provide support.

Do you need to bring anything?

The studio is equipped with easels and drawing boards. Watercolour paper is provided and basic art materials may be borrowed on the day.

You may wish to bring your own sketchbook and bring additional materials to work with as the course progresses.

Are there any additional costs?

Any additional materials must be bought at the participant’s expense.
