About Introduction to Drawing and Illustration (VA108 Summer)

Discover the fundamentals of drawing and illustration, and learn how to translate what your eyes see onto a blank sheet of paper!

What will you learn on this course?

This 12-week course will guide you through fundamental principles and rules that will make your drawings and illustration recognisable and realistic.

Students will learn classical drawing techniques and concepts, and some fundamentals about artistic expression.

The sessions will cover basic techniques, including:

  • drawing transfer methods
  • pencil drawing textures
  • types of perspective
  • light and shade
  • tonal values
  • laws of composition
  • photorealism

Your tutor will guide you through step-by-step processes and provide live demonstrations, plus one to one support and additional materials such as handouts. Some of the exercises will be based on the drawings and methods from a book called ‘Drawing – a complete guide’ by Giovanni Civardi’. The course will also look at themes such as geometrical forms, landscape, flower, and plants the human figure and portraits.

Who is this course for?

This course is suitable for adults aged 18+ years. It is open to students of all levels, including beginners with no prior experience and improvers who are looking to refine their skills.

At the heart of MAC is a focus on accessibility and inclusion. Please contact us to discuss your specific access needs. The room is wheelchair accessible. A support worker or carer may assist; carers must book a complimentary ticket if attending to provide support.

Do you need to bring anything?

You may wish to bring your own set of pencils with various grades of graphite (i.e., 2H, HB, 4B, 6B), standard pencil rubber and putty rubber. You may also wish to bring an A5 or A4 sketchbook with blank pages, or a simple folder or document protector to keep your drawings.
