About South Asian Batik Dyeing (ASC126)

Learn how to create beautiful batik inspired by South Asian fabric patterns.

What will you learn on this course?

Learn the skills of Batik, a wax resist technique originating from Indonesia, to create designs inspired by the fabric patterns in MAC’s exhibition The Offbeat Sari. This course is ideal for those who have never tried batik, or those who wish to deepen their skill in working with tjantings and melted wax. You will learn to use wax, batik tjantings, dyes and pigments.

The first day will include a guided visit to the exhibition to take images or drawings for inspiration.

The course will increase your confidence in

  • creating a design for batik
  • drawing with wax using tjanting tools
  • application of colourful dyes on to the fabric
  • create a batik free hand

Participants will finish the course having created a number of hand-painted batik designs.
