
About Still Life, Drawing and Painting (VA105 Spring)
Working directly from Still Life be guided through different materials and art techniques used in drawing, painting and mixed-media. Develop your creative skills to create exciting work inspired by Still Life.
What will you learn on this course?
On this course you will learn different art techniques and materials used in drawing and painting Still Life both in a traditional and contemporary way. Examples/ Handouts will be given to inspire you.
You will be guided step by step in using a range of materials including;
• Graphite pencils
• Charcoal
• Inks
• Pastels
• Acrylics
• Watercolours
• Mixed-media
And specific art techniques including;
• Mark-making
• Tone
• Textures
• Composition
• Perspective / scale / space
• Use of colour / use of monochrome
• Layering of paint.
• Colour mixing
You will bring together all the skills and techniques you have learnt to bring different Still Life compositions to life and work with a variety of objects. Examples / handouts will be given of Artists past and present to inspire you.
This will include;
• Fruit / vegetables
• Household objects
• Plants / flowers
• Metal
• Glass
• Ceramic
• Fabric
• Personal objects
The course is delivered through tutor demonstrations and practical exercises where students learn and apply the techniques themselves. Individual guidance and support from the tutor will be given to help you develop your skills further. Each week will end with group discussions and feedback.
On completion of this course students will have produced a portfolio of finished drawings and paintings and sample works which demonstrate the different materials, techniques you have learnt.
This is a relaxed, calming course which will allow you to explore materials and techniques, giving you the confidence to develop your work even further.
Who is this course for?
This course is for adults aged 18+ years. It is open to all levels including beginners who have no prior drawing experience, and improvers who are looking to refine their skills.

Do you need to bring anything?
Basic art materials will be provided but you may wish to bring your own resources as the course develops.
