About World of Quilts: Hawaiian Quilting (ASC153)
Discover this traditional craft, perfect for creating cushion covers, decorative textiles and functional homewares based on Hawaiian quilting and applique techniques.
What will you learn on this course?
Learn to repurpose scrap materials & sentimental fabrics into beautiful new items on this short course, designed to introduce the craft. Time is provided between classes for students to progress their work in their own time.
On this course you will learn the basics of choosing fabrics, colour value, cutting, sewing, applique, making your own bias binding for 90-degree angles or curves and assembling to make a cushion cover, or similar, based on Hawaiian quilting.
Hawaiian quilting traditionally features large symmetrical one piece floral or botanical decoration in plain bold colours. The piece is appliqued by turning in the raw edges and stitched in place by hand. You will then learn to Echo quilt by hand or using the sewing machine, to emphasise your shape.
Using this technique, you may wish to create small and easily constructed items from your samples. These could include a pin cushion, book cover, tote bag, cushion, tablet case, small wall hanging etc to keep your sewing supplies in. You will have the opportunity to work larger pieces using additional time at home if you wish.
These processes include hand stitching and machine stitching. If you haven't used a sewing machine since your school days, fear not! You will have the opportunity to learn how to confidently thread up and use a basic sewing machine, or, for those with more experience, you can progress to a walking foot and a free motion foot.
References to museums and exhibitions displaying work incorporating this technique will be made and suggestions of quilting artists you may wish to research.
The course will also include dyeing to create your own unique coloured and patterned fabrics to incorporate into your work by using simple dyeing techniques. You will learn a variety of processes including ice dyeing, dip, space and tie dyeing. This will enable your work to have a more unique and contemporary look and once you have learned the basic techniques you will be able to experiment with your own style.
Full guidance, demonstrations and handouts will be provided throughout the course.
