About An Audience With Chris Barrie

We’re thrilled to launch this year’s Square Eyes festival by celebrating a true legend of the small screen – Chris Barrie, whose starring roles on both Red Dwarf and The Brittas Empire cemented his reputation as a star of British televisual comedy.

Barrie’s career started out just as the alternative comedy of the live circuit in the 80s was creeping onto the small screen, appearing in shows like The Young Ones, Spitting Image and Blackadder. But it was Arnold Rimmer and Gordon Brittas that made his name - characters who are in some ways two sides of the same coin, each satirising the uptight British male archetype as their foibles and hang-ups land them in hot water with the rest of the world/universe.

Following a screening of the much-loved Red Dwarf season six episode Rimmerworld, Chris will be talking about his fascinating career to festival programmer David Baldwin, taking us from Rimmer to Brittas and everything in between.
