Contemporary Textile Printing (TE101 Summer)

Discover a wide range of processes for bringing life to your textiles through contemporary printing techniques.

What will you learn on this course?

In this course, you will explore different fabric print processes to give you the starting point to enhance your chosen textiles in many inspirational ways. Building a library of techniques and fabrics that can be used in future work or as an aide memoire. Experimentation in print!

We will explore:

• Using MAC as our inspiration we will create a reference board of shapes and textures on paper
• Relief printing techniques – collagraph, stamps and lino.
• Screen-printing using permanent and impermanent stencils/masks with heat-fixable inks.
• Found object printing
• Cyanotype printing using sunlight.
• Printing, painting and collaging techniques
• Exploring finishing techniques – foil treatments, appliqué and stitch options

We will be using a mixture of new and second-hand fabrics as bases as we learn the printing techniques for the first 7 weeks. For the latter part of the course Tina will support you to create your own fabric designs, textile art or a continuation of your fabric print experimentation.

As the course, and your own creative confidence progresses, you are encouraged to develop your ideas and interests, combining textile techniques to compliment and build the surfaces of your printed pieces.

You will experience a variety of approaches to printing techniques and will collect a range of beautiful fabric samples/reference pieces which will inform your projects as you develop your knowledge and experience.

Who is this course for?

This course is for adults aged 18+ years. It is open to beginners and improvers. It is suitable for people who are completely new to textiles, and for those who want to extend and refine their techniques.

At the heart of MAC is a focus on accessibility and inclusion. Please contact us to discuss your specific access needs. The room is wheelchair accessible. A support worker or carer may assist; carers must book a complimentary ticket if attending to provide support.

Do you need to bring anything?

You should begin collecting a portfolio of patterns on paper or fabric for reference use and imagery which inspires and interests you. You should wear old clothes and bring an apron to work in.
