About Sound Art (CSC146)

Spend a day learning all about sound as an art form, how to capture ambient sounds, remix and edit to make your own experimental soundscapes.

What will you learn on this course?

In this one-day course, young people will be introduced to the wonderful, experimental world of sound art. Led by professional Sound Artist, Filmmaker and DJ, Neil Milton, you will discover what sound art is, and how to make your own.

The session will begin by a demonstration of the tutor’s own art works and soundscapes along with other key artists such as Christian Marclay and Christine Sun Kim to provide inspiration for the day.

The participants will then explore the sonic texture of the surrounding areas, either inside MAC’s studios or surrounding public spaces that can then be edited, cropped and remixed using DAW (Logic) software in MAC’s dedicated media studio.

These will then be assembled and abstracted to form individual soundscapes ready for the participants to share with friends and family at the end of the session.

Who is this course for? This course is suitable for children aged 12 - 17 years. It is open to all ability levels and you don’t need previous experience. We provide a learning support worker and all our staff are DBS checked. Parents are not expected to accompany children on the course.

The course is accessible for young people of all abilities; however, the course requires working with an iMac and following instructions. A parent or carer may attend to assist the child if required; carers must book a complimentary ticket if attending to provide support. Please contact us to discuss your specific access needs. The room is wheelchair accessible.

Age ranges are set carefully to consider key age developments, materials being used and course stimulus. It is very important that age ranges are not too large or across key stages and therefore need to be adhered to.

Do you need to bring anything?

A pen and pad to write notes. A USB stick or access to cloud storage to save work at the end of the course. Please bring a mobile phone or tablet that has sound recording capacity, such as voice notes facility (free with most smartphones). Participants will need to have an email address that the recordings can be exported to so as to import into the DAW.

MAC can loan an iPad for the day if you do not have one that you can bring.

We recommend the following Apps if you do not already have voice notes facility:

Android - ASR voice recorder (available on Android store).

Apple - Voice recorder lite (available on app store).

iPad - as above

Are there any additional costs?

For the above apps, a paid version of the sound recorder must be purchased, prior to attending the session, to be able to upload recordings. (Fee approx. £5).
