About Surreal Portraits (ASC183)
Leave classical portraiture at the door as we step into the surreal!
What will you learn on this course?
Get inspired by MAC’s Surreal Season of amazing exhibitions including Emmy Bridgwater and the Birmingham Surrealists and Surreal Solihull, and become a surreal artist yourself.
Let go of the fear of portraiture by exploring surreal versions of the human face. Bend reality by merging the human features with dreamlike, bizarre, or subconscious elements.
Working directly from a portrait model, explore a very different approach to portraiture, turning to artists such as Frida Kahlo, Rene Magritte, Max Ernst, Joan Miro, Man Ray, Remedies Varo for visual stimuli. Participants are welcome to bring any books or objects they are inspired or wish in some way to incorporate in their final piece.
We will be working with mixed media, that will include paint, ink, oil pastels and some version of collage to create that one of a kind surreal portrait.
The class includes group tuition and one-to-one support from the tutor. Guidance will be tailored to your level of experience to help you achieve your aims for your work. In addition to practical drawing and painting techniques, the course focuses on creative skills, artistic knowledge, and self-confidence.
